Amick was born in 1976 in Columbia, South Carolina. He began making art seriously while in high school and continued his education at the University of South Carolina under the guidance of late James Steven and Philip Mullen. In 1999 he was honored with the Edmund Yaghjian award at the University of South Carolina and received his B.F.A. in studio art with a concentration in painting. He lives in Lexington, SC with his wife, three children, and two dogs.
